The term has become quite familiar one in the music world, even though it's not really a new feat to get the best of the best musicians together. Internationally acclaimed (and now legendary) groups like Cream and the Yardbirds, among a few, first featured popular and talented musicians from different existing groups - coming together to produce more extraordinary music, but in the past decade, bands like Audioslave and Velvet Revolver really upped the ante by merging almost far-out musical styles - not to mention personalities - and enjoying almost as big a success as their original groups.
Of course, the Philippines is also no stranger to these musical multi-matches made in heaven; and surprisingly, a chosen lot has managed to surface this '09. Franco. Yosha. Human Folk. They're all at the top of their respective games, and they've gotten their almost with a single bound. How did it happen? Was it all planned? How can we get the music?

HUMANFOLK: They're Definitely Big Enough for the World
Words by: Karen Sy | Photography: Kristine Soguilon (Indios Bravos Multimedia)
How do you fit musicial geniuses in one band? Some may think that it's practically and humanly impossible because stereotypically, a band is only big enough for one genius. Apparently, that is not the case with supergroup Humanfolk.
I am honestly having difficulty on how to start naming the members who are in this five-piece world music act that will take the country as well as the international music scene by storm once they get their album out. It is because that any music writer owe this to members' legacy and achievement in the music world, and I personally feel that their names should be treated with utmost admiration or rooted by only the most striking prefix and also because when it comes to these musicians, words don't even come close when it comes to depicting their craft.
Even if I don't mention their names here in this article, people would eventually hear about the band and who are in it. Aside from the fact that their music is an irrevocable approach to world music - because no other band in the world can make music like theirs and replicate the craft and passion that they put in, these are people that's impossible to ignore and the fact they join together to create one band is mind blowing.

HILERA: As Row As It Gets
Words by: Jason Caballa | Photography: Erik Liongoren | Art Direction: Conrad Javier
Unsigned and under the radar for the past year or so, acclaimed punk trio Hilera returned with a new, self-produced record. However, their temporary bout with independence hasn't exactly left them unscathed.
Sometime last year, the local acts signed under EMI Philippines faced an uncertain future when, after the London-based EMI Group was purchased by Terra Firma Capital Partners in 2007, its Filipino counterpart was on the verge of closure following restructuring of its parent company. Months later. and fortunately for top-caliber acts like Bamboo, Sugarfree and Hale, pretty much the same people who made up EMI Philippines did a little restructuring themselves and reemerged as PolyEast Records, virtually retaining its roster of artists.
However, one act that could have been excluded from the label's 2009 release schedule is Hilera, who, after releasing their acclaimed self-titled debut in 2007, left EMI under the threat of label limbo.
